About Chris Richards
Chris is a Certified Hypnotherapist and a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Coach (National Guild of Hypnotists, USA). She holds a Graduate Diploma in Community Counselling (Canberra University) and The International Advanced Diploma in Clinical Psychotherapy and Counselling (Essex Institute, UK) as well as many other qualifications including Suicide Prevention; EFT; Sleep Talk TM and Family Planning & Sexuality. She also holds a Bachelor of Education in Teaching (Hons) from London University and enjoys working with kids too. Her own life’s journey as well as those of her clients have led her to develop an approach to clients that is respectful and focused on the clients needs and the outcomes they desire. It is your journey and you decide what you need and how far you want to go.
Chris has worked in counselling for many years then trained to be a Hypnotherapist in 2009. She attends regular local and international training and conferences to continually update her skills and knowledge. She is very keen that prospective clients check the qualifications and experience of their therapist before embarking on therapy. It is also important to know that your Hypnotherapist is a member of a well regarded professional organisation such as The Australian Society for Clinical Hypnotherapy (ASCH).

Question: What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation, combined with focused concentration. We drift in and out of hypnotic states every day. If you’ve ever daydreamed at work or in class or “spaced out” on a long drive, you’ve experienced a hypnotic state.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
When the conscious mind relaxes, the unconscious (subconscious) mind remains focused. Your unconscious is a powerful learner and can change very quickly. Hypnosis works because your unconscious develops tools for change more easily in a relaxed state.

How long will the changes last?
Most clients find that unless they actively start to re-program their brains back to old patterns the changes they desire are permanent. Others find that with the wisdom and insights they now have there is no way they can back to old behaviours or ways of seeing their situation. In some cases, such as smoking or overeating some people find they still get tempted every now and then and that practice with the tools they have learned is essential to maintain the new states.
Once you have made the changes you want many clients choose to return every 6 or 12 months for a mental tune-up or clear out of old accumulated thought patterns and behaviours that are proving unhelpful. Just like going to a doctor or dentist for a physical check up it is sensible to have a regular mental check up or clear out too. However, it is important to note that I, like most other hypnotherapists are not medically trained and encourage you to retain your conventional medical interventions which may also contribute to your physical and mental health.
How many sessions will I need?
Based on a survey of 3000 hypnosis sessions from 1998-2001 the following is a guide:
Smoking cessation 3 – 5

Weight control/eating disorders 2 – 10
Compulsions/OCD 3 – 15
Marriage and family 3 – 10
Panic attacks/fears/phobias 5 – 15
Grief recovery/guilt 2 – 10

It is not possible to be more precise because your commitment in energy and attention is key to achieving the outcome you want and each client’s situation is different.
